Compensation Awarded for Mother’s Death

A woman has been awarded a five figure sum of damages following the death of her mother, who died after receiving “below standard care” at a hospital in North Staffordshire, reports the Daily Mail.

Seventy-year-old Sheila Baker was admitted twice to The University Hospital of North Staffordshire with severe stomach pains.

On her second visit, she was diagnosed as suffering from colitis and prescribed drugs to treat it. However, the drug that was necessary to protect her stomach lining from the other drugs she needed to take was missed out. She subsequently developed gastrointestinal bleeding and died.

Mrs Baker's daughter claims that blood tests taken after she had started taking the prescribed drugs showed that Mrs Baker had suffered a drop in haemoglobin levels, which is apparently an indication of internal bleeding, but this was not picked up by medical staff.

The hospital admitted that Mrs Baker did not receive adequate care and has apologised to her family.
