A mother has been awarded compensation after she claimed that her son’s cerebral palsy was the result of alleged medical negligence, reports the BBC.
Helen Coyle’s son Ryan was born at Bellshill Maternity Hospital 20 years ago. There had been no problems with the pregnancy and she was admitted to the hospital to have her baby induced. During labour staff monitored the baby’s heartbeat but, says Mrs Coyle, failed to take prompt action when his heartbeat slowed down.
The Court of Session judge agreed that if the midwives had called for medical help at an earlier stage then, on the “balance of probabilities” Ryan’s delivery would have been “straightforward”. As it was, he needed resuscitating with suction and oxygen after his birth and was left with cerebral palsy.
NHS Lanarkshire denied liability, however the judge found there had been a breach of duty on the part of the midwives.
Mrs Coyle had been seeking £15 million in her claim, but the exact amount of the award is not known, reports the BBC.
