We have been asked to explain what members of the public should do if they are unfortunately injured in an accident. There are three common types of accident that result in people making claims for compensation – road traffic accidents, accidents at work and slipping or tripping accidents. In each case there are three things you can do to maximise your chances of successfully recovering compensation.
If you are involved in a road traffic accident, call the police and report the accident circumstances to them. You should also call your road traffic insurers. If you have an accident at work, report the accident to your Employers and make sure they record the accident circumstances accurately in their accident book. Finally, if you slip or trip in a public place, report the accident to the relevant Local Authority.
Witness evidence can often help determine a case in your favour so if it possible to do so, ask any witnesses to your accident for their contact details. This will allow your Solicitor to take a statement from them in support of your case.
If you trip because of a hole or uneven paving slab, take a photograph of the hole or defective slab where possible showing its height or depth. In the case of a road traffic accident, photographs showing the damage to both vehicles are of great assistance. A photograph of the other vehicle’s registration number is also very helpful as that information allows your Solicitor to trace the other driver’s insurers. If you are involved in an accident at work, take photographs of anything the caused or contributed to the accident.
