The Scottish Health Secretary Alex Neil has written a letter to the Chairman of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) seeking an urgent meeting to discuss on-going concerns over the use of transvaginal mesh implants.
The Scottish Government is pressing the MHRA, which is the UK regulatory body for medical devices, for answers on a way forward for the use of mesh implants, in light of the potential issues some women are experiencing with this treatment.
The Scottish Government has also written to all GPs in Scotland to ensure they are making patients who may be considering this treatment, aware of the potential side effects.
A Short Life Working Group has been set up consisting of affected women, clinicians, Incident Recording and Investigation Centre staff from National Services Scotland, and chaired by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer.
This group has worked on a revised information and consent booklet for patients, which will be issued this summer. The Group is also working on revised care pathways for women who present with complications.
“It is extremely upsetting to hear the accounts of women who have experienced unimaginable suffering as a result of having this procedure,” commented Alex Neil. “I personally met with some of the women affected and I am clear that no-one else should have to go through the suffering they have experienced.”
